The Megayacht Turbine Propulsion Package

The Vericor TF50 Marine gas turbine package delivers approximately 5000 hp of shaft power for high performance yacht propulsion and is typically used as a booster powerplant along with conventional diesel engines. Whether driving a waterjet or propeller, the turbine engine delivers speed that simply isn’t possible with diesels alone. TF marine turbines have been driving high performance marine craft for over 30 years and today’s models are the evolution of that experience.

TF marine turbines are currently featured as an option on the Pershing 115 and have been installed on high performance yachts built by Feadship, Palmer Johnson, ISA, Oceanfast and others. TF marine turbine engines are produced by Vericor Power Systems in the US. Vericor also delivers the TF Series marine turbines to the US Navy today and has supplied engines to navies in Sweden, Japan, Korea and Finland. These engines are proven with thousands of hours of marine service.

Total weight of the 5000 hp package is only 2700 kg

The TF50 marine gas turbine, which uses conventional marine diesel fuel, is coupled to a lightweight reduction drive and is driven just like a conventional diesel engine, from idle to full power and everywhere in between. Some of the current TF powered yachts use only turbine engines, with no diesels on board. Either way, the result is the same, a tremendous amount of power in a lightweight package and compact space.

The weight of the TF50 package using the lightweight ZF 410 reduction gear is about 2700 kgs total. That is the total for the turbine engine and main reduction gear. A diesel engine of the same power will weighs 5 or 6 times this amount and will not fit into anywhere near the same machinery space. Therefore a turbine engine is the simplest way to achieve the full high speed potential of any hull size.

Drop in 5000 horsepower

A new integrated control system makes operation and monitoring of the TF50 turbine package simple and trouble-free. The bridge control is the same as a diesel engine’s and a touch screen display allows the captain or crew to check engine operation information instantly. The integrated control is a new feature for 2008 and is standard on the Pershing GT models.

The TF50 yacht package is sold by Vericor or through its approved packagers. Diesel Center in La Spezia, Italy, for example, is the packager for the Pershing 115 package and is working with other yards in Italy on various versions of high performance luxury yachts.

Installation and design assistance is available from Vericor and its packagers

Service for the TF turbine package is provided through an agreement with ABA Yachts of La Spezia, Italy and by Vericor and its packagers directly. Vericor provides training classes, complete manuals and parts catalogs and all levels of support required by today’s commercial and naval operators.
