Vericor Power Systems Announces TF60B Engine

IGTI TurboExpo ‘09, Orlando, Fla.  June 8 – Vericor Power Systems announced today that it is developing a new marine gas turbine, called TF60B, with the initial application being the United States Navy’s Ship to Shore Connector (“SSC”) program.  The TF60B is expected to enter service in 2011 fully certified to ABS Naval Vessel Rules.

The TF60B marine engine upgrades the rugged ETF40B with new components, increasing power more than 25%.  The ETF40B is currently being put into service on the United States Navy’s Landing Craft - Air Cushion (LCAC) as part of its Service Life Extension Program (SLEP).  The SSC is the planned replacement for LCAC, and will provide high speed, heavy lift capability for the US amphibious forces.

The TF60B uses the proven ETF40B compressor, and incorporates state of the art, fully marinized materials into the hot section allowing for increased temperatures and improved corrosion resistance.

The TF60B has the same external dimensions and interfaces as the ETF40B making it a “drop-in replacement” for ETF40B and TF40B engines.  The weight of the TF60B is expected to be equivalent to the ETF40B, retaining the high power density characteristics that make the TF series the most widely used marine gas turbine in its size class.

“We are proud of our long relationship with the United States Navy, and we are excited to offer the next generation of successful TF technology to the Navy’s SSC program” said Dr. Michael Luz, Vice President of Engineering for Vericor.  “The TF60B successfully passed Critical Design Review in May and all of its design objectives have been confirmed.”

Certain components of the TF60B will be made available to customers of existing engines as an upgrade to increase life and/or add power.  Current marine customers will be able to upgrade their existing engines to the new TF60B configuration.

Over 400 TF Series marine gas turbines are in service with navies and commercial customers worldwide.
